During World War II, German prisoners of war were put to work harvesting Door County's cherry orchards. With food rationed and money scarce, the Christiansen family struggles to survive. One of the prisoners, a teacher named Karl, is befriended by the family and invited to tutor their teenage daughter. When their son returns from war bitter and injured and bearing an intense hatred fo Germans, their world is threatened.
